Staying in Rockport, Texas With Kids

An affordable, quiet stop on our full-time RV journey, and a good reminder that the slow places often matter just as much as the exciting ones.

Rockport, Texas was one of those places we did not plan to fall in love with, and in some ways we did not. But it still became one of the most important stops in our full-time RV journey, and for reasons that had nothing to do with flashy attractions. It came down to slowing down, keeping our budget in check, and settling into everyday life on the road.

We stayed in Rockport for about a month while traveling the Texas coast. It was not our favorite destination overall, but it played its role perfectly in this season of travel. And honestly, some of the quietest stops end up teaching us the most.

The biggest win: how affordable it was

Let us start with the biggest reason Rockport worked so well for us. The cost. We stayed for the entire month for $400 total, which broke down to roughly $12 a day. For full-time RV living, that is almost unheard of, especially anywhere near the coast.

Having a full month at that price gave us breathing room. It let us settle into routines, focus on work and roadschooling, and take our time exploring nearby areas without ever feeling rushed. If you are RV traveling with kids and trying to keep expenses low, Rockport is incredibly hard to beat.

A quiet, small-town coastal feel

Rockport has a very small-town, coastal feel. It was safe, calm, and unhurried, which is a welcome change when you have been moving from place to place for a while.

There is not a long list of attractions here, but that is part of its charm. Days feel slower. Mornings are quiet. Evenings feel peaceful. For families who need a reset stop between bigger destinations, Rockport does that really well. It also helped that we were close enough to Corpus Christi and Port Aransas to get all of our Christmas shopping and exploring done without a long drive.

The beach, and why we did not swim much

Rockport does have a beach area you can visit, and while it is lovely for walking and exploring, it was not a big swimming spot for us during our stay. It looked like it would be wonderful for kids since there are no waves and the water is shallow and calm.

This time of year, though, we ran into a lot of jellyfish, which quickly took swimming off the table for the kids. They were not thrilled about that, but we still loved walking the shore, collecting shells, and being outside together. If swimming is a top priority for your family, nearby Port Aransas delivers a lot more on that front.

The unexpected highlight: Memorial Park and the dog park

Hands down, the best thing we discovered in Rockport was Memorial Park. It is massive, beautifully maintained, and gave our whole family room to breathe.

• Play areas for the kids
• The largest and best dog park we have ever been to

The dog park alone deserves its own mention. It is incredibly spacious, thoughtfully designed, and gives dogs so much room to run and play. Our one-year-old Golden Retriever, Oaklee, has endless energy, and this park was an absolute dream for her. She loved meeting new dogs, running full speed, and stretching out in a way she rarely gets to.

It is full of sand, but that was part of the fun. She got completely filthy at one point and somehow shook every bit of it off by the time we left. My only regret is that we did not find Memorial Park sooner. It turned into our favorite place to walk, teach Oaklee some manners, and let her socialize with other dogs. So much fun.

Sometimes the quieter stops end up being just as important as the big, exciting ones.

A donut shop we could not stop thinking about

Not far from Memorial Park is Ski Bay Donuts, and wow. This one became a family favorite fast. From the very first bite, we all looked at each other wide-eyed, knowing it was going to be a repeat stop. And it was, more times than I would like to admit.

• A massive cinnamon roll donut the kids could not get enough of

Everything we tried was delicious, fairly priced, and served by the friendliest staff. It became one of those little routines that made Rockport feel familiar and comforting.

Falling in love with H-E-B (from a family of Iowans)

As Iowans, we were also introduced to something Texans clearly take very seriously. H-E-B. And now we get it.

• The dips and ready-to-eat foods
• How fun grocery shopping suddenly became

It sounds small, but those everyday experiences matter when you are living on the road full-time. H-E-B made meals easier and more enjoyable, and it quickly became part of our Rockport routine.

Why we left a few days early

While Rockport was affordable, quiet, and comfortable, we eventually realized it was not where our hearts were pulling us. After spending time in Port Aransas, we knew we wanted more ocean access, more beach days, and the chance to try boondocking right on the beach.

So we packed up a few days early and headed that way. We loved Port Aransas more overall, but Rockport served its purpose. And honestly, you cannot beat the price.

Rockport is not a destination packed with attractions, and it is not somewhere we would rush back to for adventure. But it is:

• A great place to reset
• Ideal for long stays on a budget

For families traveling full-time in an RV, Rockport can be exactly what you need, even if it is just for a season. And sometimes those quieter stops end up mattering just as much as the big, exciting ones.
